Fresh VS Frozen Vegetables: What shall I choose?

It is generally considered healthier to pick only fresh vegetables for your foods and salads. You have perhaps heard that frozen vegetables are less nutritious than the fresh ones. Some say that during the frozen status, vegetables lose all their healthy and necessary vitamins and minerals. Therefore, consume such products will not benefit you in any way.

However this is not entirely true. Fresh products, are only considered fresh for a very short time period since harvested. Therefore, if you own a farm or live near a farm this means the vegetables you consume are pretty fresh. Alternatively, if you are living in a city, then the vegetables you buy have already spent a large time period being transferred from one place to another.

Several days may pass, from the harvesting until your local supermarket can supply them to you. In this case, apart from the time it took for the veggies to get here, there could be also waiting in the stand for someone to pick them up, under the strong lights and high temperature.

This means that these vegetables have lost a significant amount of the useful nutrition before they reach our table. This is why, sometimes buying fresh vegetables is not really beneficial to your health and human system.

Frozen fruits and vegetables are frozen minutes after their harvesting. This means that they can maintain some of their useful nutrition until it is time to consume them. In addition, most of the times they are already prepared for you, thus all you have to do is defroze them and cook them.

On the other hand, frozen produce can surely lose its fresh flavor and crunchy texture. Therefore, it is probably best to use frozen vegetables in the cooking process, rather than eat them raw or in salads. Try out some recipes of your preference with frozen veggies and then you can decide which ones you can use and which ones you rather not use.

Of course, you can always purchase your favorite seasonal vegetables and froze them yourself for later use. Pick up seasonal fresh spinach, clean it up and put it in your freezer. This way you can have some spinach during the summer months and you will be certain of its origin since you would have selected it.

Find out which vegetables can be stored in the freezer and which cannot. For example all the green leafy vegetables can be easily stored in the freezer without losing their important nutritional elements. For instance, carrots contain high quantities of water. Water can freeze inside carrots and destroy some of their nutritional value.

Balance is, again, the keyword here. Try to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables when it is within their season and enjoy them in abundance. Store some of them, perhaps your favorite, in the freezer, so you can enjoy them during those months of the year, when you are unable to find your favorite produce around.
