Soy and Cancer. What is their correlation?

Although there are still no extensive studies on this burning issue, the truth is that soy products may benefit our health significantly. More specifically, the food produced by soybeans contains phytoestrogens. These substances are extremely useful to our body and may help prevent breast and prostate cancer. Unlike dietary supplements that contain phytoestrogens, phytoestrogens found in foods (such as soy) have surprising effects on our body.

As we all know, in Asia people consume far greater amounts of soy than in other regions. According to scientific studies, women living in Asia and eating significantly more soy on a daily basis have experienced much lower rates of breast cancer. Therefore, the preliminary information available to the public in regards to the benefits of soy in the diet of women is encouraging. However, as it concerns men, the results have been controversial. In some cases, phytoestrogens help prevent against prostate cancer. In other cases, there was no advantage from soy consumption.

Another point worth mentioning resulting from scientific studies is the fact that soy and its derivatives seem to benefit young people more. Therefore, soy is much more beneficial to children and young adults. Phytoestrogens balance the testosterone and hormone levels in the body.

How to Consume Soybean?

As we mentioned above, it is important to not ingest phytoestrogens through supplements. Instead, fresh foods should be consumed, such as soybeans in their simple form and edamame, tofu and soy milk. There are several recipes that can help us introduce soybeans into our daily diet. Specifically, we can add soy as an ingredient in our salad or experiment with meat and minced soy. Many people enjoy the excellent taste of vegetable burgers and replace animal fats with soy. Also, you can try soy milk or yogurt in delicious and nutritious smoothies. Soy milk is also commercially available in various forms and you will often find soy chocolate milk or soy milk fortified with vanilla or caramel. All these give a special flavor to the product, but pay attention to colorants and the addition of unhealthy ingredients.

Are There Side Effects?

Although soy is a healthy diet choice, it is necessary to discuss with your doctor or dietitian before you integrate it fanatically on your table. Particularly if there is a health problem or risk of recurrence and relapse of a preexisting condition (such as cancer), it goes without saying that medical advice is necessary. Beyond this, soybeans can give us a healthy solution for many different recipes. It is low in calories, rich in protein of high biological value and provides nutrients, adding special flavor to any dish.

Even if you are not an Asian cuisine lover, try soy in its various forms and you will be amazed by the variety of products you can find on the market, covering all your nutritional needs.
